This KB article relates to PaperCut MF, the edition of PaperCut that implements copier control
Once a user has logged into a device it is often desirable to have the user logged out automatically after a period of inactivity. When setting a new time both security and usability should be considered when determining the optimal setting for the environment.
Brother: By default there is a timeout that will occur if there is no activity on the panel. For some models this timeout is fixed at 60 seconds and for other models it can be configured by setting the value for the “Mode Timer”. This is set under the “General” tab in the web interface or the menu on the MFC panel.
Canon: Canon devices have an ‘Auto Reset’ feature, which by default logs a user out after 120 seconds of inactivity. The timeout length can be modified via the web interface by accessing the devices web page at http://<device-ip>/. Select Settings > Registration Select Timer > Energy Settings (under Preferences) Select Timer > Energy Settings Configure the Auto Reset Time to the desired value Click OK
Dell: To set the timeout value on a Dell device you will need to access the config editor via the Advanced Config tab in the Device Details screen. Look for “ext-device.inactivity-timeout-secs” The user will be logged out automatically if the keypad remains inactive for the specified number of seconds.
The default is set to 60 seconds.
Fuji Xerox ApeosPort V+: There are two places that timeouts can get set on this platform.
The first is at the device level If the user is idle on a non-PaperCut MF device screen, then the user is logged out based on the device’s timeout. To configure the device’s timeout on the device
Log in to the device as an administrator. Navigate to Tools > System Settings > (Group) Common Service Settings > (Features) Machine Clock / Timers Select Auto Clear, then click Change Settings Select the option On, then enter the desired device timeout Note: If the user is idle on a non-PaperCut MF device screen, then the user is logged out based on this value. However, if the user is idle on a PaperCut MF screen and if this value is lower than the PaperCut MF timeout (the config key ext-device.inactivity-timeout-secs), then the user is logged out based on this value (i.e. this value supersedes and overrides the higher value of the config key). Click Save. The second place is the Device config editor. If the user is idle on a PaperCut MF screen, then the user is logged out based on the config key ext-device.inactivity-timeout-secs or the device’s timeout, whichever has the lower value.
To set this config key you will need to access the config editor via the Advanced Config tab in the Device Details screen. Look for ext-device.inactivity-timeout-secs The user will be logged out automatically if the keypad remains inactive for the specified number of seconds.
The default is set to 60 seconds.
HP Chai: To change the panel timeout, access the devices web page at http://<device-ip>/, then go to Settings > Configure Device > Device Behavior (options will appear below) > Inactivity Timeout.
Change the timeout to the desired value, then click “Apply”.
HP FutureSmart: The user will be logged out automatically if they do not perform any activity for 60 seconds.
This timeout value can be changed in the device’s web admin. To change the timeout access the device web page at http://<device-ip>/, then go to General > Control Panel Administration Menu > Administration > Display Settings > Inactivity Timeout. Configure the Inactivity Timeout to the desired value.
Kyocera: To edit the timeout on a Kyocera the best option is to use Net Viewer (Kyocera’s network device management software).
An alternative method is to to access the Admin settings via the touch screen. Once logged in as an Admin (into the device not PaperCut embedded) then edit the “Panel reset timer”.
NOTE: The timeout options above will affect copier access only. PaperCut release station access timeouts on Kyocera will not be affected with this configuration.
Konica: There are numerous settings that can be applied on Konica Minolta devices.
Setting the time before Low Power or Sleep mode is used:
Select Utility → Administrator Settings and enter the password. Select System Settings → Power Supply/Power Save Settings. Enter appropriate settings for Low Power and Sleep Mode settings. Select OK to save. Setting the time before settings for all functions return to default:
Select Utility → Administrator Settings and enter the password. Select System Settings → Reset Settings → System Auto Reset. Select the and set an appropriate System Auto Reset Time. Select OK to save. Setting the time before the settings for each function to return to default:
Select Utility → Administrator Settings and enter the password. Select System Settings → Reset Settings → Auto Reset. Select the function and enter an appropriate time. Select OK to save. Your Konica Minolta supplier can advise in more detail.
Lexmark: To set the timeout value on a Lexmark device you will need to access the devices’s web page at “ <a href="http://lexmark-device-ip/" reseed-ignore class="urllink">http://lexmark-device-ip/</a>”
Select “Settings” on the left-hand menu bar. Select “General Settings” under “Default Settings”. Select “Timeouts”. Change “Screen Timeout” to an appropriate value and click “Submit”. This is the amount of time to wait before returning from PaperCut to the device Home screen. On the left-hand menu bar, select “Settings” Select “Security” under “Other Settings”. Select “Miscellaneous Security Settings”. Select “Login Restrictions”. Change the “Panel Login Timeout” to an appropriate version and click “Submit”. This is the amount of time to wait before returning from the device Home screen to the PaperCut login screen. This information is also given in the Lexmark Embedded manual.
Ricoh SDK/J: To set the timeout value on a Ricoh SDK/J device you will need to access the config editor via the Advanced Config tab in the Device Details screen. Look for “ext-device.inactivity-timeout-secs” The user will be logged out automatically if the keypad remains inactive for the specified number of seconds.
The default value is set to 60 seconds.
NOTE: The device’s System Auto Reset also impacts logout time. Please see section 11.1.2 Set Default Application and System Timeout of the Ricoh SDK/J Embedded manual.
Ricoh SmartSDK: On Ricoh SmartSDK devices, the user is logged out when the panel detects inactivity, as determined by Ricoh’s System Auto Reset or Sleep timers.
RISO: The timeout setting for RISO embedded can be set after logging into the ComColor (at the device or via web browser) as Admin and navigating to the “Login Setting” page.
The Auto logout time can then be set from 10–3600 seconds.
Oki: This timeout value can be changed in the device’s web admin. To change the timeout access the device web page at http://<device-ip>/, then select Administration > Setup > scroll down > set under “Energy Save” and set the “Auto Clear” drop down.
Samsung: The timeout settings on a Samsung is configured using the “Auto Logout” timer. This setting is located in different locations on different Samsung MFPs in either the Web admin or the device LCD.
On the LCD in either: Machine Setup > Security > Authentication > Method > Options >Auto Logout Admin Settings > Setup > Authentication > Auto Logout
On the device web admin interface in location: System Setup > Machine Setup > Auto Logout
Sharp: Important: There are two levels of timeout control on the Sharp platform.
1: When the user is on a PaperCut UI screen (login, user/pass, release, etc) the timeout value from the config editor via the “Advanced Config” tab in the Device Details screen is applied. (Devices → [Name of the device] → Advanced Config) Look for “ext-device.inactivity-timeout-secs” The user will be logged out automatically if the keypad remains inactive for the specified number of seconds.
The default value is set to 60 seconds.
2: Once logged in to the MFP, the MFP’s own timeout settings are used. To change this Log in to the copier’s web interface as an administrator using a web browser to access http://<device-ip>/. Navigate to ‘System Settings‘ > ‘Operation Settings’ Change the 60 sec. Auto Clear Setting to the desired value. Press Submit to apply the changes.
Toshiba: This timeout value can be changed in the device’s web admin. To change the timeout access the device web page at http://<device-ip>/. You will then need to go to Administration > Setup > scroll down > set under “Energy Save” and set the “Auto Clear” drop down.
Xerox: Changing the timeout on a Xerox is typically set on the device itself. The option for the timeout is in different places depending on device and firmware.
As a rough guide it can be edited by accessing the device web page at http://<device-ip>/. Select Security > System Timeout Adjust the “Touch User Interface System Timer” settings to the desired value.
