“Hello! I’m wanting to embed a Multi-Function Printer with the Hive app. What points should I consider when planning and undertaking this task?”
In this KB, we will cover:
The Multi-Function Printer Compatibility Matrix The Environment (The Network) The Multi-Function Printer Connectivity Endpoints Discovering the Multi-Function Printer Embedding the Multi-Function Printer Common problems during or after embedding First things first - the Multi-Function Printer, is it supported? Before you start the process of installing an embedded, please be sure check our printer compatibility list and find out which Hive app your printer supports: Supported Devices
It’s important to remember that our full embedded app on this platform requires inbound calls to perform actions such as logging in with a card and unlocking a device for copying. Since our cloud services can’t speak directly to these Multi-Function Printers (MFPs), we require an edge node to communicate with them.
If you are using one of these specific manufacturers, please ensure you have an online and stable edge node that can communicate directly with your MFP on the local network. To find manufacturers that meet these criteria, click the Supported Devices link above or check this list:
Fujifilm Fuji Xerox HP Konica Minolta Toshiba Xerox The environment - all things firewall and networking Please check the PaperCut Hive Full Release App Multi-Function Printer firewall ports section here: System Requirements.
What are the endpoints the Multi-Function Printer needs to reach? It’s important to remember that each OEM has a distinct endpoint.
PaperCut Hive Full Release App Multi-Function Printer URLs Pocket/Hive can use a wildcard for the following URL: \*.printerapp.papercut.com. If you’re unable to use a wildcard, expand me for platform-specific URLs, shown below.

Discovering your Multi-Function Printer - remember to probe! Here’s how: Discovering printers on your network.
Installing the embedded application Currently, PaperCut Hive allows for two embedded installation methods.
The One-click Installer Manual Method - Instructions via The Hive console. Manufacturers compatible with the One-click method
Fujifilm Sharp KM Xerox HP Epson Toshiba Lexmark Manufacturers compatible with the manual method
Canon Ricoh Kyocera Brother Having problems during or after the setup process? Let’s take a look at some common issues and causes. “Help! I’m trying to install the embedded application, but the option is not showing under Device > Apps. What could be causing this?”
Check the printer compatibility list: Supported Devices. Check you’re not encountering a subscription limitation. (Have you exceeded your number of embedded devices? Has your Hive subscription expired?) “Help! When a user logs in, they are faced with the message Cannot contact Accounting Server**, what could be causing this?”**
DNS, Network - Check the Multi-Function Printer can reach the specified endpoints: The Multi-Function Printer Connectivity Endpoints . “Help! I can’t get the application to link to my Hive subscription. What could be causing this?”
DNS, Network - Check the Multi-Function Printer can reach the specified endpoints: The Multi-Function Printer Connectivity Endpoints . Check for subscription limitations. “Help! The swipe card authentication on the Multi-Function Printer is not working, what could be causing this?”
If the MFP in question is a Konica Minolta, Sharp, or Toshiba, check you have a Super node online and available. Check the card reader is recognized by the MFP. “Help! I’ve embedded my Multi-Function Printer, however, the Quick Scan option is greyed out in the Hive admin console. What could be causing this?”
Is the MFP running the latest firmware? Is the MFP compatible with the Quick Scan feature? Supported Devices. Does the device have an ADF (automatic document feeder) or a glass platen for scanning? Something else? Check our PaperCut Hive Known Issues Page: Hive Known Issues.
